of humour Bobby McGees at 186 Exhibition Street is recommended.

the place for the young laid back crowd where there is a
mixture of techno, drum ‘n’ bass, funk, soul
and fusion on different nights.

Chapel Street is an upmarket disco catering for all ages
and tastes. The Warehouse Niteclub at 14a Claremont Street,
South Yarra is a multilevel venue with a large dance floor
and pool tables.
At 445 Toorak Road the Silvers Nite Club features various
live bands and is suited for an older crowd.

A Melbourne visit should include the Esplanade Hotel at
11 Upper Esplanade in St Kilda. Known affectionately as
‘Espy’, this is an old, comfortable pub with
free bands most nights overlooking the bay. The suburb of
Fitzroy boasts quite a few pubs worth visiting. The Rainbow
at 27 St David Street is a friendly and unpretentious pub
that appeals to a wide clientele. The Punter’s Club
at 376 Brunswick Street features Australian music attracting
a bohemian and student crowd. Not far away is the Evelyn
Hotel at 351 Brunswick Street offering live music acts,
while the Builders Arms at 211 Gertrude Street and the Napier
Hotel in Napier Street are both good Fitzroy watering holes.

colourful names include the Bell’s Hotel and Brewery
on 157 Moray Street, South Melbourne, the Geebung Polo Club
at 85 Auburn Road, Auburn, the Redback on 75 Flemington
Road, North Melbourne Melbourne has no shortage of chic,
fashionable bars that serve a wide range of drinks from
imported beers to wines, cocktails and coffee. Some have
dance nights with a varying theme and they all
open till late. So where do you start? In the city Velour
Bar at 121 Flinders Lane appeals to the young and stylish
crowd, Forty Four, 44 Lonsdale Street offers dark lighting
and a relaxed atmosphere. Troika at 106 Little Lonsdale

267 Little Lonsdale Street offers Latin music; Hell’s
Kitchen at 20 Centre Place is an alternative bar with a
mixed clientele. Misty at 3-5 Hosier Lane is the place for
stylish and young people. One of the most beautiful bars
in town is the Syracuse at 23 Bank Place that features high
ceilings, antique furniture and romantic décor. For
variety, funky music and classy bar food seek out the Lounge
at 243 Swanston Walk. The Scubar at 389 Lonsdale Street
is part lounge, part bar and part club, where every night
has a different theme.
